The study on summer and winter sports was conducted by WADA Medical Director Alan Wernek and TUE Manager David Healy. Experts examined the five Olympic Games from 2010 to 2018 to find out if athletes with TUE won more medals than athletes without therapeutic exceptions.

The results of the study showed that the number of individual sportsmen competing with the TUE at the Olympic Games was less than 1%.

During the five Olympic Games, 20,139 competitions were held and 2,062 awards were awarded. Athletes with TUE took part in 0.9% (181) competitions and won 21 medals.

“The TUE program is a necessary part of the sport, it allows athletes with legal medical conditions to compete on equal terms with the rest.

The program is recognized by the overwhelming number of athletes, doctors, and anti-doping organizations. Strict TUE registration procedure allows to avoid system abuse, ”Wernek commented on the results of the study.
